Experience report CARINTHIA DIScover
Since early 2010 we work together with Baikal trekking. The collaboration came thru Till Gottbrath (partner at the PR agency of Carinthia). He has also been our partner on the frozen Lake Baikal Expedition in February 2001. For some years the sleeping bag standard EN 13537 exists to help the consumers find the right sleeping bag for their purposes. This standard is not entirely uncontroversial, because it does not take into consideration whether a sleeper is moving much or how much moisture in the form of sweat or breathing he emits during sleep. "The colder it gets, the more unrealistic the measured values are", says Miguel Ferreira, sales and marketing manager at CARINTHIA. "During a test we did last year, an extreme range of -65.2 ° C was measured with our ECC Expedition 1200. From our work with Andrei Sagusin who has been doing serious winter trips for years, we expect useful feedback from the field. "It's also about the question of how much perspiration a sleeping bag absorbs over several days and how quickly it dries again.
MY EXPERIENCE:
- a great warmth to weight ratio.
- The bag has a unique detail, it is called "Discover" (Dry Insulation Cover). This basically comprises of a "double outer shell", which you can turn "counter-clockwise". The idea behind it: In very cold weather it is extremely important that the perspiration you produce every night - no matter how cold it is - finds its way out of the sleeping bag again. Depending on the temperature, this moisture condenses on the inside of the sleeping bag outer shell fabric. In fact, every morning I could "left-turn"the DIScover and remove a lot of ice crystals from inside the bag - moisture that otherwise would have taken the sleeping bag much longer to dry out. This really works.
- The DIScover zipper is bit awkward to use with thick gloves. Carinthia wants to improve that.
- The material of the sleeping bag is simply the best! It is light but very durable. Until now no down from the sleeping bag came out!
- Side zipper, hood and insulation collar work fine.
